How to choose an engagement ring …… If You’re the GUY!

wedding Planner

In this 21st century of ours, women and men have in general achieved equality within their roles in society, the workplace and the home, so when couples decide to get married, the norm is for them to shop around together at jewellery stores until a ring is found that suits both style and budget.  However, as free and liberal as we’ve become, there are still plenty of us that secretly dream to be handed a beautiful ring chosen by our man, preferably on bended knee, as he pops the question.  Come on… admit it!
So, if you’re one of those romantic men who likes to do things the old-fashioned way, here’s what you need to know before choosing a ring for your beloved:

1.       Ring size.
You could “borrow” one of her dress rings (perhaps with the sworn-to-secrecy help of her mother, sibling or flatmate) to match the size.

2.       Colour - silver or gold.
Notice what jewellery she wears mostly.  Is it silver/platinum-coloured or does she prefer gold?

3.       Style - flashy or under-stated.
This one’s harder; although a woman might be reserved and conservative in her manner and her dress style, when it comes to diamond rings, the quietest little mouse could be harbouring desires of the most flamboyant kind.  One way of discovering her preferences would be by making nonchalant positive or negative comments about rings worn by other women at social functions, or in magazine or TV adverts and see what she responds.  Something else to keep in mind is that we women like to drop hints about what we would prefer when it comes to gifts, jewellery or engagement rings.  So, even if you haven’t made your intentions known, your lady has probably already planned ahead for that possibility and you should be on the alert for subtle indications of preference like “Ooohh isn’t that a GORGEOUS 1.98-carat marquise diamond set in platinum and red gold on etched V-shaped prongs?”

Once you’ve decided on the style, make sure you buy it from a reputable jeweller who can provide you with authentic certificates from the relevant authority.  Her engagement ring is not just a token of your love for her; it’s also an investment which traditionally should cost you the equivalent of two months’ salary, so best you be sure it’s not a fake or of poor quality.

Good luck!
